Continuing Professional Development for IDBTS students, past and present.
The theme this year is Teaching Classes and will include practical work with dogs for those who wish to attend as a handler.
This is an interactive block of study where theory goes hand in hand with discussion and practical work. Students can participate with their dogs in a variety of lessons designed to teach at first hand the value of different types of classes. From obedience to games, from classes where the syllabus comes first to classes where the needs of dog and owner are of paramount importance, students will be given the opportunity to consider the aims of each class, to learn at first hand the advantages and disadvantages of each, and to observe what is really being learnt in class.
Topics covered include:
- ideas for themed classes
- integration or segregation: dealing with problems
- motivation for owners
- assessment; class programmes
- puppy, adolescent and adult classes
Sheila lookas at her route through teaching classes. From the early days when she was an obedience instructor, through the stages of going her own way and exploring new ideas to offer something different to dog owners, through the evaluation of each type of class, to the rewards of considering the needs of both dog and owner and offering a new concept in Life Skills education.
Although Sheila considers teaching and instructing classes during the IDBTS, this course will further develop those themes considered during Areas 10 & 11 of the IDBTS.
As usual, this course will be planned and executed very carefully in order that no dog's welfare is compromised. Not an easy task bearing in mind the content, but this promises to be a hugely interesting block of study! A number of points will be discussed, and suggestions are welcomed from students, preferable in advance if possible.
