Puppies can be up to 20 weeks of age at start of class

Where possible, owners are encouraged to attend our classes free of charge as an observer before even buying their puppy in order to obtain useful advice and help with planning and management strategies. Puppies may attend from the age of 8 weeks in order to begin to experience life in the outside world as safely as possible. It is important for puppies to have access to a gradually increasing range of experiences.

Both in class and in everyday life, emphasis should be on making each experience enjoyable yet not too stimulating, ensuring that puppies feel safe at all times. We keep a balance between allowing the puppies to experience new sights, whilst ensuring their health is not compromised between inoculations. Once puppies are fully inoculated, they are encouraged to explore the inside and outside environment in our safe class venue. Issues including jumping up, nipping, diet and toilet training can be discussed and help given. Practical work such as techniques to help your puppy to walk nicely on lead and to want to come back when called may also be included at this stage.

This work is not covered as an “exercise”, but as a natural progression of a developing relationship between puppy and owner. It is important that your puppy should want to be with you and should choose to be well-behaved rather than only performing “on command”. By giving choices we are aiming at developing a sensible dog displaying good behaviour in his maturity rather than one that simply obeys when he is told and then does not know how to make rational choices when he is alone.
