Dog Courses

Sheila Harper Limited offers an extensive programme of dog courses for the aspiring professional or for self-interest. There is a range of formats, varying from short seminars, one, two and three day courses, week-long activity holidays and the fifteen month International Dog Behaviour & Training School accredited by the Open College Network. For dog owners in the Staffordshire area, there is also a selection of practical life skills courses delivered from our premises in Hednesford on a weekly basis.

It should be emphasised that the dog courses available from Sheila Harper do not comprise what many people may think of as traditional dog training, where a variety of ages and breeds of canines, along with a similar variety of owners, are brought together in an enclosed environment to learn commands and to perform trained exercises that often have little bearing on real life.

Our work recognises each dog as an individual and puts them at the centre of our work to understand canine behaviour and language. It is so much more important that we learn to recognise and respond appropriately to canine communication than for dogs to be taught our commands by rote. This is a unique and holistic approach, which educates by getting to the root causes of behaviours and understanding them. It is an approach that considers the impact on dogs of stress, nutrition and other health issues as well as the environment in which they are asked to cohabit with us and the traditional means by which we handle them.
