Although this is a “stand-alone” workshop course it would also be of benefit to have attended “A Question of Sport” on April 23rd.
As a nation, we are extremely conscientious when giving our dogs physical exercise. Come rain or shine, we take our dogs for walks as we are so keen to look after their physical needs. We are aware that our dogs have instincts, that collies seem to enjoy chasing, terriers adore digging, and that Labradors love making a bee line for the nearest water or food! One of the problems with these behaviours though is that they sometimes don’t fit into our lives. A dog carrying out some of his natural instincts is seen to be a nuisance or even to have a behaviour problem. Quite often, these dogs may have learnt to indulge their instincts inappropriately, because it is the only outlet they have. When they are over-stimulated, over-exercised or when too many demands are made upon them, they may find it difficult to settle, or they become demanding or reactive.
Whether this over-activity is the case, whether we have dogs that are shy, cautious or fearful, or whether we have dogs that are housebound through illness, age or circumstance, one thing we can do is to provide mental challenges. Appropriate activities can help psychological and emotional development, can provide an outlet for unwanted behaviour, can improve self-confidence and problem solving, and can also build better relationships between dog and owner.
- Find alternative activities for specific reasons whether your dog simply needs additional stimulation
- Discover activities that will help your dog better cope with life even if he suffers from fear, stress or high reactivity or if he can’t go out
- Learn activities suitable for your individual dog and circumstance that can take the place of high activity to work towards calming your dog
- Turn your walks into exciting adventures
- Find out how to interact with your dog in order to build his trust and self confidence
- Discover games and activities that both you and your dog can enjoy on an everyday basis and that don’t put pressure on either of you to perform
These ideas are easy to put into practice and can be integrated into your normal life without much time needed for complex training. Everybody, two or four-legged can join in independent of height, fitness or knowledge. Suitable for all ages of dogs, from puppies to old age.
Join us for a weekend of enjoyment and relaxation; find out how to channel that energy into alternative fun and constructive activities.
